The ‘modified Bass technique’ is a widely recommended toothbrushing method designed to clean both the teeth and the gum line effectively.
It focuses on removing plaque from the area where the teeth and gums meet, which is where gum disease often begins. This technique is commonly suggested by dental professionals because it combines gum care with thorough tooth cleaning.
To use the modified Bass technique, start by placing your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line. The bristles should rest partly on the gums and partly on the teeth. Using gentle pressure, make small back-and-forth vibrating motions so the bristles can slip slightly under the gum margin. This helps remove plaque that builds up just below the gum line. Avoid scrubbing hard, as this can irritate the gums and wear down enamel.
After the vibrating motion, roll or sweep the bristles away from the gum line and toward the chewing surface of the teeth. This “modified” part of the technique helps clear loosened plaque and debris from the tooth surface. Repeat this process for a few teeth at a time, working your way around the mouth. Use the tip of the brush for the inside surfaces of the front teeth, holding it vertically and making the same gentle motions.
The modified Bass technique takes a bit more attention than simple horizontal brushing, but it can improve plaque removal along the gum line when done consistently. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and brushing for about two minutes twice a day helps make the technique both safe and effective as part of a regular oral hygiene routine.
Ask the dental team at your next visit to demonstrate this technique to you if you are not sure.
